The verdict is in and BP (British Petroleum) has been ordered to pay $4.5 billion in penalties and plead guilty for the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll remember the explosion resulted in the death of 11 workers on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and the mile deep Macondo Oil well poured 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf over 87 days. Under the Clean Water Act 80 percent of BP penalties will go to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Texas.
While the guilty verdict is good and the penalties even better the damage far exceeds any monetary amount. We’ll never restore the lost human, animal and marine life. The homes and businesses destroyed will never quite be like they were and the ocean, shorelines and land areas will limp along for years.
Was this simple human error? Or was it self-serving greed?
Consider the words of Jeremiah, the Old Testament prophet, “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve … But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Jeremiah 24:15
Will you serve self or the Savior this day?
