Silence blanketed the ranch early this morning while the horizon spilled over with the brilliant golden orange, pink and purple shades of sunrise. My hands cupped warm vanilla cream coffee, and in the dawn’s soft light, I noticed several new calves near the house. How small, gentle, and delicate they appeared. Some stood close to their mamas and others took their fill of breakfast, but a coppery brown one caught my eye. This one’s mama enthusiastically yet gently bathed her back and forth, up and down; and the wee one seemed thoroughly enraptured.
Isaiah 40:11, “Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.”
Our God is a personal God and intimately acquainted with our needs.
The verse before proclaims His awesome strength.
Isaiah 40:10a, “Behold, the Lord GOD will come with might, with His arm ruling for Him.”
The verse afterward reveals Him as powerful Creator.
Isaiah 40:12, “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And marked off the heavens by the span, And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales?”
Sandwiched in between these two is verse 11, the view of God as loving and gentle, much like that Angus mama. I think that must be how God considers you and me, and in that, I take comfort and encouragement. I need tender care to lick the wounds life so readily dishes out. I need outstretched arms to carry me when life’s burdens are too much and I can go no further. I need direction when I’ve lost my way. I need the loving God who is not only awesome strength and powerful Creator, but the One with all grace who willingly stoops down to pick me up.
“Dear Lord, help me to recognize Your Presence and Power in the midst of today’s pain. Thank you, Amen.”
Blessings of comfort and reliance on God! Prayer requests?
